Jack London Signed Check During Last Trip to Hawaii, Four Months Before His Death

Signed check, 1p, measuring 2.75" x 6.25", dated July 8, 1916, Honolulu, Hawaii. A check from The Bank of Hawaii paying to the order of the Honolulu Construction and Draying Co. a sum of one dollar and ninety cents. Signed at lower right as "Jack London". Features expected cancellation puncture at middle right, with "paid" stamp from The Bank of Hawaii dated July 11, 1916, similarly endorsement on verso. General toning and isolated blue-green markings at right, not affecting signature. Overall, very good; signed days before London's final return from Hawaii back to California.

Jack London (1876-1916) was an American novelist, journalist and activist. A pioneer of commercial fiction and American magazines, he was one of the first American authors to become an international celebrity and earn a large fortune from writing, with his most popular works being Call of the Wild (1903) and White Fang (1906). In contrast to these stories set in Alaska and the Yukon, London would also draw writing inspiration from the island of Hawaii. Indeed, he would spend most of the last year of his life there, arriving in December 1915 and staying until late July 1916, during which time he met the Olympiad swimmer and Hawaiian surfer Duke Kahanamoku, Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalaniana‘ole, Queen Lili‘uokalani and others. By the time he returned to his ranch in California, London had been suffering from kidney failure and would not survive the end of the year.

All items will ship with signature required, and full insurance. Most items are sent via Federal Express, with P. O. Box addresses being sent through USPS. We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

Upon winning your item(s), you will receive an invoice with our in-house shipping and handling fees included. ***We will ship to the address as it appears on your invoice. If any changes to the shipping address need to be made, you must inform us immediately.***

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.
