Jack London Pays His Telephone Bill! PSA/DNA Slabbed Gem Mint 10!

PSA/DNA slabbed check inscribed overall by adventure writer Jack London (1876-1916) and signed by him as “Jack London” in the payee line. The unnumbered check was issued from the Bank of Hawaii, Ld. in Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii on May 15, 1915 in the amount of $5.40 payable to “Mutual Telephone.” The check, with a cream and gray background, bears typical bank stamps and cancellation marks. Graded by PSA/DNA as Gem MT 10. Check measures 6.75" x 2.75" and is enclosed in a PSA/DNA certified slab measuring 9.5” x 4.5”.

Jack London frequented Hawaii during the last years of his life. The island celebrity's comings and goings were faithfully reported by the Honolulu-based Hawaiian Gazette, and maybe even by the telephone grapevine. The Mutual Telephone Company was originally granted a charter by the Kingdom of Hawaii in 1885. One of its owners and investors was Scottish businessman Archibald Scott Cleghorn, better known as the father of Hawaii's Princess Kaiulani.

In 1915 alone, even though London was in chronically poor health, he published a play, five poems, and a novel called The Star Rover. These works joined other London classics like Call of the Wild (1903), White Fang (1906), and The Cruise of the Snark (1911).
