Magazine

A vintage softcover copy of the April 1961 issue of "Escapade: Pleasure For Every Man" Magazine, Vol. VI, No. 3 (Derby, Connecticut: Bruce-Royal Publishing Corporation, 1961), personally owned by Beatnik writer Jack Kerouac (1922-1969). The front cover lists an original retail price of 50 cents, and is inscribed as "Kerouac / page 72 / Save / 1961," possibly in the hand of Kerouac's brother-in-law and estate executor, John Sampas. Stamped with the Jack Kerouac Estate stamp and the raised blind estate seal on pg. 1, above the Table of Contents and masthead. Expected wear and weathering to the covers including wrinkles and scuffs. Else clean within. 1-72pp. 8.375" x 10.875" x .25."

The April 1961 issue of "Escapade" featured Jack Kerouac's essay "The Last Word" on page 72, which begins: "The mad road, lonely, leading around the bend…" This is an excerpt from Kerouac's experimental work "Visions of Cody," posthumously published in 1972. Written around the time that Kerouac was drifting through the American West with fellow Beat Neal Cassady, in 1951-1952, "Visions of Cody" revolves around the struggles of protagonist Cody Pomeray, inspired by the real-life Neal Cassady.

"Escapade: Pleasure For Every Man" was a short-lived but very successful erotic bimonthly magazine published from ca. 1955-1967. A major competitor of "Playboy" Magazine, "Escapade," too, interspersed its prurient "pictorial features" with serious articles written by some of the most popular writers of the period, like Jack Kerouac, Ray Bradbury, Isaac Asimov, and Nelson Algren. Kerouac's "The Last Word" series appeared in "Escapade" between June 1959 through April 1961. In these essays, Kerouac opined about such topics as literature, history, culture, travel, sexuality, religion, baseball, and jazz.
