Jack Kerouac's Personally Owned 1964 Day Calendar
Other

An unused day calendar personally belonging to Jack Kerouac (1922-1969), the famous American writer who brought us "On The Road" (1957). It is easy to imagine Jack Kerouac squirreling away this 1964 day calendar - a complimentary gift from the Becker Insurance Agency of East Northport, New York - perhaps stuffing it into an already overcrowded desk drawer. The spiral-ring daybook is apparently unused. The Jack Kerouac Estate stamp and embossed seal can be found on the last page. Its front cover is currently in two pieces but could almost certainly be repaired. Expected wear consistent with age, else near fine. Measures 5.5" x 8.125."

1964 was an extremely difficult year for Jack Kerouac. On September 19, 1964, Kerouac's older sister Gabrielle Caroline "Ti Nin" Kerouac Blake (born 1918) died at the age of 45 of a heart attack. Caroline was Kerouac's only surviving sibling; his older brother François Gerard Kerouac (1916-1926) had died at age 9 of rheumatic fever. Caroline appeared under various guises in Kerouac's major works: as Catherine "Nin" Duluoz in "Doctor Sax" (1952); as Ruth Martin in "The Town and the City" (1957); as Nin in "The Dharma Bums" (1958); and in numerous other short stories and sketches.

Kerouac maintained his older sister had died of a "broken heart". Earlier in 1964, Caroline's second husband Paul Blake, Sr. (1922-1972) had left her for another woman, effectively abandoning her and their son Paul Blake, Jr. (1948-2018). It is believed that Caroline died on September 19th either during or shortly after a heated telephone conversation with her estranged husband. Kerouac was so distraught at his sister's death that he purportedly locked himself in the bathroom of his St. Petersburg, Florida home instead of attending her burial at Orlando's Greenwood Cemetery. Kerouac's mother wrote on September 19th: "My daughter died today…My only little girl gone."

Also in 1964, Kerouac's health continued to deteriorate and he was in between major literary projects. Kerouac's semi-autobiographical novel "Visions of Gerard" was published in 1963; "Desolation Angels" would be published in 1965.
