Jack Kerouac Gifted "Panache" Literary Journal With Original Cover Letter Re: Neal Cassady - Ex-Kerouac Estate
Booklet with TLS

A vintage softcover copy of "Panache," an obscure New York City literary magazine, personally owned by Beatnik writer Jack Kerouac (1922-1969), and gifted to him in September 1968, about one year before his death. Stamped with the Jack Kerouac Estate stamp and the raised blind seal from the Executor of the Estate, John Sampas, Kerouac's brother-in-law. Accompanied by an original cover letter from "Panache" Editor Rosalie Frank discussing sending Kerouac copies of the literary journal and inquiring whether she could obtain permission to reproduce some of Kerouac's correspondence with Neal Cassady.

The lot consists of:

1. A copy of "Panache" Magazine, No. 2, 1968 (New York: Panache, Inc., 1968). Stamped with the Jack Kerouac Estate stamp and the raised blind estate seal on pg. 1, the booklet's combined masthead and copyright page. With soft black and white wrappers and stapled binding. The original retail price of $1 is listed on the front cover. Featuring poetry, short stories, essays, and literary interviews. Expected wear including minor shelf rubbing. Uneven toning/mat burn located on the inside of the front cover and on the back cover. Even toning within, else clean. 1-64pp. 6" x 9" x .25."

2. A 1p typed letter signed by "Panache" Editor Rosalie Frank, signed as "Rosalie Frank" in teal colored pencil at lower left. September 20, 1968. [New York, New York.] Typed on "Panache" letterhead. Expected wear including flattened transmittal folds, and a few scattered stains, else near fine. 8.5" x 11."

Frank addressed this letter to Kerouac in Lowell, Massachusetts, writing in part:

"Dear Mr. Kerouac:

Curt Johnson, Editor of 'December' Magazine and advisory editor of 'Panache' Magazine, has told me of the existence of a series of letters exchanged by you and Neal Cassady, which may now be in the document collection of the University of Texas.

Would a small selection of these letters be available for presentation in 'Panache'?

You will want to know what 'Panache' is, of course, and so I enclose copies of our two most recent issue…" [only one issue is included in this lot]

Frank's request was pushy as well as insensitive; Neal Cassady (1926-1968) had died at age 41 under mysterious circumstances just a few months earlier, in February 1968. Cassady had been Kerouac's companion during the 1947-1950 cross-country odyssey immortalized in Kerouac's bohemian classic "On The Road" (1957).
