Jack Kerouac Estate "Truer Words" Scrapbook: 95 Quotes From Dickens, Goethe, Shakespeare, Eliot & Others
Scrapbook

A vintage scrapbook album from the estate of Beatnik writer Jack Kerouac (1922-1969). N.d., but probably ca. 1950s-1960s. N.p. The Whitman #3758 scrapbook lists an original retail price of 29 cents. The album, the covers of which feature multicolored geometric shapes and stylized representations of paintbrushes and scissors, is inscribed in an unknown hand, possibly that of Jack Kerouac's third wife Stella Kerouac, on the first page. Stamped on the first page with the Jack Kerouac Estate stamp and the raised blind seal from the Executor of the Estate, John Sampas, Kerouac's brother-in-law. Expected wear including uneven toning, isolated tape and glue stains, tape remnants, chipped edges, and closed edge tears, some repaired. The front cover has some indistinct scribbles along the left edge, and the covers in general show expected weathering. Else very good to near fine. Approximately 80 pages, of which 8 are filled and the rest blank. 11.125" x 13.325" x .25." Also accompanied by about half dozen loose newspaper clippings, mostly of dinner recipes!

The first page of the scrapbook album is entitled "Bethia / Truer words. Old Sayings" in an unknown hand, possibly that of Stella Kerouac (1918-1990), Jack's wife after 1966. The first 8 pages of the album contain a total of 95 "Truer Words" quotations from historical notables carefully affixed to the album pages. The bubble-shaped magazine clippings in various colors are a mix of Biblical quotations, proverbs, mantras, and aphorisms from scientists, statesmen, philosophers, entrepreneurs, religious leaders, royalty, and most importantly, writers. Featured quotes by authors including: Cicero; Plutarch; William Shakespeare; Voltaire; Samuel Johnson; Goethe; George Eliot; Charles Dickens; William Makepeace Thackeray; Henry Wadsworth Longfellow; Ralph Waldo Emerson; Nathaniel Hawthorne; Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr.; Mark Twain; Helen Keller; Joseph Conrad; and Franz Kafka.

Jack Kerouac Estate scrapbook album "Truer Words" excerpts:

- Samuel Johnson: "No man every yet became great by imitation"

- Thomas Edison: "None of my inventions came by accident; they came by work"
