Description:

J.Q. Adams Signed Scalloped Ships Papers for Father of Epes Sargent VI

A ship's passport signed by President John Quincy Adams "J.Q. Adams" and countersigned by U.S. Secretary of State Henry Clay "H. Clay". 1p of vellum, Washington, D.C., dated March 31, 1828. Measuring 10.75" x 15". With stiff folds and slight warping around the seal. Uneven toning, with staining, soiling, and foxing throughout. Boldly signed by both. Very good overall.

The partly printed document, No. 1994 in part:

"By the President of the United States of America Suffer the Brig Nestor, Epes Sargent master or commander of the burthen of Two hundred & Thirty Six tons or thereabouts mounted with Two guns navigated with Thirteen men To Pass with her Company Passengers Goods and Merchandize without any hindrance seizure or molestation…" Bearing an embossed wafer seal in the lower left corner and naval shipping motifs at the upper margin. On verso are written acknowledgments of the ship changing masters: Ebenezer A. Shaw on October 30, 1828, and John O. Baker on March 28, 1829.

Epes Sargent (1784–1853) was a shipmaster in Gloucester, Massachusetts. He was orphaned at the age of five and raised in his grandfather’s home. Sargent then took after his father, grandfather, and great-grandfather in becoming a ship owner. He mastered several ships, including the brig ‘Romulus’ and later the ship ‘Volga’. His son, Epes Sargent VI, eschewed family tradition and became a poet, playwright, and newspaper editor of the "New York Mirror" and "Boston Evening Transcript." He was also a member of the "Knickerbocker group", and rubbed elbows with the likes of Washington Irving, William Cullen Bryant, James Kirke Paulding, and Lydia M. Child.
