John Quincy Adams (1767-1848). Autograph Letter Signed, "John Quincy Adams," as U.S. Ambassador to Russia, 1p, on bifold laid paper measuring 7.5" x 9.25", St. Petersburg, April 10, 1814. Integral address leaf addressed in an unknown hand to John R. Hurd. Docketing at verso beside remnants of red wax seal, likely in the hand of Hurd. Expected mailing folds and creases. Minor mat burn to margins. Scattered areas of discoloration and toning. In fine condition and darkly penned, with an immaculate full signature.

Written while one of the negotiators of peace after the War of 1812, Adams's letter reads: "I have expected the pleasure of seeing you these three days; which has been the principal cause of this answer to your favour of the 6th inst. I think you will be fully justified in disposing of the Indigo, at the terms now offered."

An April 6, 1814 entry in Adams's diary mentions our letter's recipient and the "Indigo" in question: "6..VI..15. I was engaged great part of this day in going round the City to look at travelling Carriages for sale. I found however none to suit me. After dinner I took a ride with Mrs. Adams - Mr. Smith dined with Mr. Lewis. Received this Evening a letter from Mr. Hurd, asking further advice respecting the sale of Mr Gray's Indigo. This was a Great Holiday -The Annunciation of the Virgin Mary."
