Description:

J.P. Morgan, Daniel Butterfield, Frederick Law Olmsted & Other Northerners Establish the Southern Famine Relief Commission in 1867

A 3pp printed circular issued by Southern Famine Relief Commission Executive Committee members including financier J. Pierpont Morgan, ex-Union General Daniel Butterfield, and landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted. The circular issued on January 18, 1867 listed Committee members' names in print on the last page; among these was J. Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913) as "J. Pierrepont [sic] Morgan"; Daniel Butterfield (1831-1901) as "Daniel Butterfield, U.S.A."; and Frederick Law Olmsted (1822-1903) as "Frederick Law Olmsted, Recording Secretary." Expected transmittal folds, else pristine. 8.5" x 11." Accompanied by an original transmittal envelope, stamped and cancelled, addressed to a member of a Civil War-era ladies' aid society.

In part: "That in that part of our country which lies between the ridges of the mountains and the navigable waters of the larger rivers flowing through the cotton-producing districts east of the Mississippi, an extraordinary drought prevailed last summer, and that, owing to conditions resulting from the late rebellion, much less ground than usual was planted, while its tillage was extremely imperfect…A state of famine has resulted which must increase in severity with every day that passes until June…Among the destitute there are many thousands of women and children, chiefly of the most ignorant class, who have been deprived by the rebellion of their natural protectors, and who would not now be living but for the charity of their little less unfortunate neighbors…"

The Southern Famine Relief Commission was established by prominent Northern philanthropists in New York City in January 1867 in an effort to ameliorate the lingering, long-term effects of the Civil War, chief among them malnutrition and food insecurity. Between January and November 1867, the Commission was responsible for fundraising, purchasing, and distributing enough Indian corn to feed 600,000 starving Southerners for four months. It also collected cash, clothing, and other non-perishable foodstuffs, with an estimated $3-5 million amassed and spent during its operations. In other Commission documents, Morgan was listed as the chairman of a standing committee on "City Collections."
