J.D. Salinger Signed Contract for "Franny and Zooey", Stipulating "no photographs"
DS

J.D. Salinger signed contract for "Franny and Zooey." 2pp on the recto and verso of one sheet, measuring 8.5" x 14", New York, dated February 25, 1964. A contract between Salinger and the publisher Ediciones AT of Barcelona for "Franny and Zooey" to be translated and published in Catalan. An interesting part of the contract are the additional terms added at the end of the form which reflect Salinger's demands for personal privacy: "It is understood by the Publisher that no photographs may be used on the cover or jacket or in any connection with the book. No photographs should be used in promotional copy or advertising. No biographical material may be used for promotion or advertising." Also signed at the conclusion by Dorothy Olding, as witness, and JB Cendros, as Publisher. With a flattened center fold, with two small tears starting at the fold edges. Paper loss to the top two corners, not affecting any text. The typed text is slightly blurred. Faint toning throughout. Boldly signed.

This standard boilerplate contract was prepared by Salinger's, agent Franz J. Horch Associatest. Salinger planned a series of stories on Franny, Zooey and the Glass family. "Franny" originally appeared in The New Yorker in 1955 and was followed two years later by "Zooey." The two long stories were first published together in book form by Boston publisher Little, Brown in 1961.

Salinger's intense need for privacy is on full display in this document. He had famously withdrawn to Cornish, New Hampshire, just over a decade earlier and by this time was fairly reclusive. Salinger's autograph is rare in any format, and this is an ideal example in more ways than one.
