J. Rawlins Conveys U.S. Grant's Orders Opting for a Bolder Plan to Capture Vicksburg
LS

John A. Rawlins LS. One page, 7.75" x 9.75"; Young Point, Louisiana; March 31, 1863. Rawlins writes to Major General John B. McPherson conveying Ulysses Grant's orders withdrawing the Pioneer Corps. The Corps had been tasked with the clearing of lakes and swamps, road construction, and other engineering projects explored by Grant during the Vicksburg Campaign. Rough edge at left where integral page was removed and with expected folds. Light ink stain well away from text, otherwise bright paper. An excellent war-dated letter signed by one of Grant's most trusted advisers.

From the collection of Larry Berra, son of baseball legend Yogi Berra.
Rawlins' letter directs that the Pioneer Corps "proceed to this place immediately to report to Capt. F.E. Prime, Chief Engineers for orders." Signed, "Jno A Rawlins" as Assistant Adjutant General.

That April, General Grant turned his efforts to moving his army down the west bank of the Mississippi River. By coordinating with David Dixon Porter to run gunboats and transports past the Confederate batteries at Vicksburg, his troops were able to cross south of the city at Bruinsburg. From there, he launched an aggressive inland advance that ultimately culminated in the capture of Vicksburg.

Rawlins was promoted to brigadier general five months after signing this letter in recognition of his indispensable service as Grant's chief of staff. He had been at Grant's side since the early days of the war, and after the success of the Vicksburg Campaign, his influence only deepened.
