Description:

J. Q. Adams Signed Ohio Land Deed

A land deed signed by 6th U.S. President John Quincy Adams (1767-1848) as "J.Q. Adams" at the lower right. Recorded at Washington, D.C. on June 20, 1828. The document, which is partly printed and partly handwritten on vellum, was also signed at the lower center by George Graham, Commissioner of the United States General Land Office between 1823-1830. Bearing an intact embossed United States General Land Office seal at lower left, with minor folding to sawtooth points. Pencil inscribed by a former collector verso. Expected folds and edge darkening, else very good to near fine. 15.125" x 9.375."

Certificate No. 1098 granted 80 acres of land to Jacob Shaffer of Clark County in western central Ohio. The deeded land was located "between the Miami Rivers," referring to the area between the Great Miami River and the Little Miami River, two tributaries of the Ohio River running southwest towards the Ohio and Indiana state borders.

"Whereas Jacob Shaffer of Clarke County has deposited in the General Land Office of the United States, a certificate of the Register of the Land Office at Cincinnati whereby it appears that full payment has been made by the said Jacob Shaffer according to the provisions of the Act of Congress of the 24th of April 1820, entitled 'An act making further provision for the sale of the Public Lands' for the "West half of the South East quarter of Section Ten, in Township Three of Range Ten (between the Miami Rivers) in the District of land offered for Sale at Cincinnati, Ohio, containing Eighty acres…"

The U.S. Department of Interior Bureau of Land Management General Land Office Records includes this June 20, 1828 land deed for Jacob Shaffer under the state of Ohio (see attached photo of the entry included for reference.) There are more than 20 entries of land deeds granted to a Jacob Shaffer (sometimes with co-owners) in 12 counties throughout the state of Ohio between 1812-1853. It is unclear whether this is the same landowner as the one mentioned in our land deed. If so, he would have been a prodigious landowner.

John Quincy Adams served as president between 1825-1829.
