Description:

J. Pierpont Morgan Signed New Jersey Junction Railroad Company Loan Bond Certificate

A 100-year loan bond certificate issued by the New Jersey Junction Railroad Company, signed by trustees J. Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913) as "J. Pierpont Morgan," and by Harris Charles Fahnestock (1835-1914) as "H.C. Fahnestock" in the Trustees Certificate section on the last page. The brown-bordered loan bond certificate, No. 2250, is attached at left to five nearly complete sheets of loan coupons. Issued from New York, New York on June 30, 1886. Countersigned by Josiah N. Reed in his capacity as company president, and also by the company secretary along the bottom margin. Bearing two blind-embossed seals along the left margin. Expected wear including light paper wrinkles, else near fine. Only one coupon has been neatly removed from the coupon sheets, with 199 of 200 coupons remaining. 13.5" x 9.5." Accompanied by two nice biographical descriptions of company trustees J. Pierpont Morgan and Harris Charles Fahnestock.

This loan bond certificate authorized the payment of 4% interest on the original $1,000 loan to be paid in $20 portions semiannually between August 1886 and February 1986. The loan coupon sheets are in especially remarkable condition, with only one coupon corresponding to August 1886 missing from the group. Another major point of appeal is the highly graphic nature of the certificate. It is enriched by multiple harbor vignettes, winged sphinx decorations, and a variety of fanciful font types and print.

The New Jersey Junction Railroad Company was incorporated in 1886 and opened for passenger and freight traffic in 1887. It operated as part of the New York Central Railroad, running between Hudson County and Jersey City in upper New Jersey. Gilded Age mega industrialist Morgan became a director of the New York Central Railroad after 1877.
