Description:

J.-P. Sartre Double Autograph on "Modern Times" Letterhead!

An autograph endorsement by French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre (1905-1980), signed and inscribed by him in English and French as, "To Lionel Aucoin / J.P. Sartre [or J.P.S.] / 24 [or 26] Juin 1956 / Paris / J.P. Sartre." The twice autographed sheet of "Les Temps Modernes" letterhead is flanked by a high-quality photo reproduction portrait of Sartre at right; an engraved plaque with a transcript of the endorsement below; and an engraved plaque providing biographical information at left. Not examined out of the frame. A "Gallery of History" (Las Vegas, Nevada) label is affixed to the paper backing verso. The overall size of the frame is 28.5" x 21.5" x 1.25." Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity from R&R Enterprises Autograph Auctions (Amherst, New Hampshire.)

Sartre dedicated his double autograph to autograph collector Lionel Aucoin. Sartre's autographs--the top one a more stylized signature, or perhaps even his initials, and the bottom one more clearly delineated--were inscribed on a single leaf of notepaper with "Les Temps Modernes / revue mensuelle" ["Modern Times / monthly review"] letterhead. The notepaper shows expected wear including light paper folds and a few isolated scuffs in the upper right corner, else near fine. The sight size of the stationery sheet is 5.125" x 8.25."

Jean-Paul Sartre had co-founded the quarterly magazine "Les Temps Modernes" along with fellow French philosophers Simone de Beauvoir and Maurice Merleau-Ponty in October 1945; Sartre would act as a contributor, sit on its editorial board, and serve as its director. "Les Temps Modernes" provided commentary on current events, political developments, social trends, and the arts, especially literature. The magazine folded in 2019 after 74 years.

Jean-Paul Sartre was one of the most influential French philosophers of the twentieth century; he theorized and wrote extensively about Existentialism. Sartre was as comfortable writing novels and plays as he was articulating complex academic subjects. Some of his most famous works include his 1938 novel "Nausea," and his 1943 philosophical treatise "On Being and Nothingness."
