ALS

James Monroe (1758-1831). Autograph Letter Signed, "James Monroe," as president, 1p, 8" x 9.75", Washington, November 20, 1818. Paper remnants at lower left likely indicating a previous bifold, now a single sheet. Expected transmittal folds with separation and minor loss. Tape repair at verso. Age toning, soiling, and isolated dampstaining. Else, very good plus condition.

Monroe writes to William Benton with some urgency regarding a land transaction, in full:

"Sir / I am very anxious to hear from you respecting the land of Shorr's Esqr.[?] as it is important for me to take steps in regard to it. I have procur'd the cloth for the people, & can furnish it, when the waggon or other opportunity favors. I wish to hear from you without delay. / with esteem your /
James Monroe.
Washington
Novr. 20. 1818.
Whatever your opinion may be you had better say nothing respecting the land. I wish the papers mentioned when I saw you & the trunk when the waggon comes down. I hope that every thing goes on to your satisfaction."

Letter is listed in the James Monroe Papers at the University of Mary Washington as being addressed to William Benton, who managed affairs at Oak Hill. The entry further lists that Monroe is making arrangements to send cloth for his slaves ("I have procur'd cloth for the people"). There are multiple letters to Benton listed that year on similar matters, which align with this content.

Just days before penning this letter, Monroe delivered his State of the Union Address to the 15th U.S. Congress. He spoke of the prosperity the United States was experiencing, noting abundant harvests, flourishing commerce, and a surplus in revenue. A central theme of the address was foreign relations, particularly with Great Britain and Spain. The Treaty of 1818, with Great Britain, was recently concluded on October 20, 1818, resolving standing boundary issues between the United States and the United Kingdom.
