Adams John Quincy 1767 - 1848 Former President and now Congressman John Quincy Adams assures a constituent that a post-office will be established at East Middleborough, just 15 miles west of Plymouth Rock. Autograph Letter Signed "J.Q. Adams" as Member of Congress, 1p, 7.75" x 6.5". Washington, January 10, 1832. To Zachariah Eddy, East Middleborough, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. Fine condition. With integral leaf, 10" x 8", franked "J.Q. Adams" on the 4.5" x 3.25" (folded) address panel. Clear red circular "CITY OF WASHINGTON JAN 10" and straight line "FREE" postmarks. Portion of address leaf is missing, not affecting franked panel. Docketed. Fine condition.

In full, "I have received your Letter of the 28th inst. ["inst. has been crossed out and replaced with "ulto" äóñ not by Adams] The Petition for a Post-Office at East Middleborough has been referred to the Committee on Post-Offices and Post-Roads, from the Chairman of which I have received the assurance that it shall be inserted into the general Bill for the Establishment of Post-Offices äóñ I shall give all my attention to the subject, while before Congress, and use all proper exertions that your wishes in this respect may be gratified. I am with much respects, Sir, your obedt Servt J.Q. Adams."

On December 20, 1831, from the House Journal, "...Mr. Adams presented a petition of inhabitants of that part of Middleborough, in the county of Plymouth, in the State of Massachusetts, called East Middleborough; which petitions, severally, pray for the establishment of post routes therein described. Ordered, That the said petitions he referred to the Committee on the Post Office and Post Roads."

In 1833, the East Middleborough, Massachusetts, post-office was established.
