On February 13, 1899, Scottish novelist and playwright J.M. Barrie replied to a letter from his home in Kensington, London. His correspondent had requested a copy of Barrie's play The Little Minister. "Dear Sir", Barrie wrote, "In answer to your letter it is not possible to get a copy of the play of The Little Minister. But I thank you for your letter and am glad you liked the play. Yours sincerely, J.M. Barrie".

Barrie's play The Little Minister was adapted from his 1891 novel of the same name. Set in a fictionalized Scottish mill town called Thrums, The Little Minister tells the story of a socially conscious minister, a noblewoman disguised as a Gypsy, an evil landlord, and striking mill workers. The novel was first dramatized as a 4-act comedic play 6 years later, in 1897, under the direction of producer Charles Frohman (1856-1915) and starring future Broadway star Maude Adams (1872-1953) as Lady Babbie. The Little Minister play first debuted in Washington, DC, and played for 300 performances at New York City's Empire Theater. The original theater poster is shown here.

J.M. Barrie is best known for the monumental success of his 1904 play Peter Pan, Or the Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up. In an interesting connection, Maude Adams, who had collaborated with Barrie and Frohman in The Little Minister, starred in the role of Peter. Barrie's charming sketches of his native Scotland, as well as his imaginative children's stories, quickly secured his literary reputation in turn-of-the-century Britain. Barrie lived in London between 1895-1937, and at the "133, Gloucester Road, S.W." address between 1895-1902.
