Iwo Jima Flag Raiser Ira Hayes Signed FDC, Plus Photographer Joe Rosenthal
Archive
A pair of two items commemorating the iconic second flag raising on Mount Suribachi, consisting of one first day cover and signed card with stamp block. Signatories include Corporal Ira Hayes and the image's photographer, Joe Rosenthal. Varying degrees of scattered soiling, weathering, and age toning throughout. Otherwise, very good with bold signatures.

The lot includes:

1.) Commemorative cover featuring an illustration of the second flag raising, bearing four 3 cent postage stamps. Measuring 6.5" x 3.5", Washington, D.C., July 11, 1945. Signed along top margin as "Ira H. Hayes/ P.F.C. U.S.M.C." Hayes (1923-1955) fought in both the Bougainville and Iwo Jima campaigns, but is perhaps most remembered as one of the six men to appear in the "Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima" photograph by Joe Rosenthal.

2.) Joe Rosenthal signed index card, bearing an affixed block of four 3 cent postage stamps celebrating the iconic Iwo Jima flag raising. Measuring 5.75" x 3.5", n.p., ca. 1945. Signed and inscribed in ballpoint pen as "Joe Rosenthal/ AP Photographer, Iwo Jima 1945".

The second flag raising occurred in the early afternoon, after the mountaintop was captured and a smaller flag was raised on top around 10:30 that morning. Three of the six Marines in the photograph- Sergeant Michael Strank, Corporal Harlon Block, and Private First Class Franklin Sousley- would be killed in action during the battle. The other three Marines in the photograph were Corporals (then Privates First Class) Ira Hayes, Harold Schultz, and Harold Keller.
