Issues of the "US Telegraph Extra" Promoting Jackson in the 1828 Election
Newspapers

Washington: Green & Jarvis, March 1, 1828- January 24, 1829. Volume I, No. 1 - No. 36 (lacking Nos. 3, 8, 16, 19-21, 23, 31), with 4-page contents listing at rear. 8vo (5.625" x 9.75"). Bound in half sheep with marbled boards. The masthead reads: "This paper will be devoted exclusively to the Presidential Election, and be published, weekly, until the 15th of October next…" However, issues continued beyond the given date, with the final issue devoted to listing the electors for every presidential election held, as well as the popular vote by county for the 1828 election won by Andrew Jackson. Front board detached, lacking spine, with text block split into several sections. Intermittent damp staining, with occasional loss of paper to a handful of issues, most notably to the bottom first sheet of No. 21. A great example of early populist campaign literature.

Duff Green issued the "Extra" to support Andrew Jackson's presidential campaign and counter pro-John Quincy Adams newspapers. The "Extra" was a precise and effective political instrument of the Jacksonian press network, issuing rapid responses to campaign controversies and publishing speeches, letters, and exposés aimed at rallying Jackson's supporters. The perceived injustice of John Quincy Adams' 1824 victory over Jackson was a frequent topic. Most notably, the July 12, 1828 issue publishes the results of the popular votes for the 1824 election for all four candidates, showing Jackson to be the clear winner. The October 18, 1828 issue is devoted exclusively to recounting the bargain Henry Clay was said to have made with John Quincy Adams to secure the position of Secretary of State. Titled, "Henry Clay and the Bargain," the writer aims to present, "A new view of the old story of the bargain; ‘Leaving not one loop to hang one doubt upon.'"

The "Bargain" refers to allegations that Henry Clay, once eliminated as a candidate, used his position as Speaker of the House to steer the House vote toward John Quincy Adams. In return Adams promised Clay the position of Secretary of State, a prestigious post already regarded as the traditional stepping-stone to the presidency.
