Description:

Interesting letter of response from Rabin as Minister of Defense about employing Arabs in the Israeli Army.

YIZHAK RABIN (192-1995) Typed Letter Signed, "Y. Rabin", in Hebrew, as Minister of Defense, dated December 25, 1986, one page, 5.75" X 8.25", on Knesset stationery. In full, "Shalom, / In response to your direct parliamentary question 1425: / Questions 1-3: / The civil administration does not employ Arab citizens in kitchen work, neither at the bridges nor at army camps. / Regards, / Y. Rabin / Minister of Defense". Two fold lines. Fine condition. Christian and Muslim Arabs were exempted from obligatory service in the IDF and, although they could volunteer, were often screened out by security checks. In 1956 Druze leaders, feeling that being exempted from military service denied them full rights of citizenship, requested that their constituency be drafted. Beginning in 1987, the IDF made efforts to boost recruitment of Christian Arabs and beduins. As of 1988, Israel's Druze and Muslim Circassian minorities were subject to conscription. However, resentment grew within the Druze community because they were drafted while other Arabs were exempt. Minorities tended to serve in one of several special units: the Minorities Unit, also known as Unit 300; the Druze Reconnaissance Unit; and the Trackers Unit, which comprised mostly beduins. In 1982 the IDF general staff decided to integrate the armed forces by opening up other units to minorities, while placing some Jewish conscripts in the Minorities Unit.
