Berlin Irving

Irving Berlin Signed Allied Military Currency 1 Lira Note

An Allied Military Currency note signed by American composer Irving Berlin (1888-1989) as "Irving Berlin" verso. The Series 1943 1 Lira note was issued with the serial number A26680260A. With a turquoise border and stylized depiction of a wheat field in sepia recto, and FDR's "Four Freedoms" printed verso. Lightly pencil inscribed along right edge. A little edge darkening, else near fine. 3" x 2.625".

Irving Berlin composed an estimated 1,500 songs over his fabulously successful 60-year-long career, including instantly recognizable hits later appearing in Hollywood and on Broadway. During World War II, Berlin devoted himself to unpaid morale-boosting war work. He wrote many songs valorizing buying war bonds, paying income taxes, and donating to the American Red Cross. His greatest achievement, though, was the creation of his This is The Army touring stage show. Berlin accompanied the show to various military bases, and sometimes into war zones, for the next 3 and 1/2 years. Its 300-person ensemble cast performed over two dozen original Berlin songs. It's likely that Berlin signed this currency while supervising the show.

The Allies issued their own currency to troops in recently conquered territories in an effort to control destabilized currency. Allied Military Currency was eventually issued in Italy, Germany, Austria, France, and Japan.
