Ironic Lee Harvey Oswald Limited Edition Photos: One with Rifle, One with Daughter
Photograph
A superb pair of gelatin silver prints of Lee Harvey Oswald: one holding a rifle, and one holding his baby, June. The photos measure 8" x 10" b/w each and are part of a limited edition run of just 50. Oswald's rifle shot is numbered 11/50, while that with June is numbered 38/50. Fine condition. University Archives owns the negative of these photos, and will issue no further prints after its initial run of 50. Provenance: Robert Oswald (1934-2017).

This stunning pair of photos showing the incredible dichotomy of Oswald's life: the first photo, taken in 1958 by brother Robert Oswald, shows a young Oswald as a Marine while on leave, standing in a desert landscape and holding a rifle in hand. In this almost-predictive image, Oswalds stands very much alone and detached in remote surroundings, yet with a smile which is clearly at odds with the off-putting setting. Oswald had enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1956 while underage. While in the service, Oswald perfected his marksmanship and learned rudimentary Russian. He was granted a hardship discharge in 1959 to care for his mother, but defected to the Soviet Union instead.

The second photo was taken just a few years later and shows Oswald holding his baby, June Oswald, born in 1963. This time Oswald again stands alone and smiling, but in front of a small suburban home, positioning him as a proud and loving father. Of interest is that Oswald is wearing a distinctive plaid shirt which he can be seen wearing time and time again, including while stationed in Russia after he defected. These photographic images ironically show man happy in two very diverse settings, one of which references death, and the other, life.

A scarce and unusual pair of limited edition photos, perfect for a collector of Oswald or Kennedy memorabilia!
