Ira & George Gershwin Signed Notecard and Check
Archive

A pair of items signed by musical icons George and Ira Gershwin. Composed of a signed 3" x 5" card and a signed check. The signed notecard is inscribed, dated, and signed by Ira Gershwin: "Best wishes, Ira Gershwin/ Beverly Hills; July, 1974." The check is signed "George Gershwin" but is filled out in another hand. Measuring 6.5" x 2.75", New York, dated January 7, 1931. Check No. 746, drawn on The National City Bank of New York, made out to Bank of America for $200. With a deposit stamp on verso and cancellation punches, which do not pass through Gershwin's signature. Minor toning and soiling to the notecard. Overall very fine. The check has flattened folds with some paper loss at the top edge. Ink ghosting and smudging from being folded. Both items are boldly signed.

Ira Gershwin (1896-1983) was an American lyricist who collaborated with his younger brother, composer George Gershwin (1898-1937), to create some of the most memorable songs of the 20th century. With George, he wrote more than a dozen Broadway shows, featuring songs such as "I Got Rhythm", "Embraceable You", "The Man I Love", and "Someone to Watch Over Me". George's promising career was cut short, however, when he died at the age of 38 of a malignant brain tumor. Ira Gershwin continued songwriting after George's early death, and he wrote additional hit songs with composers Jerome Kern, Kurt Weill, Harry Warren and Harold Arlen.
