Interesting Lincoln Group w/ Ribbon and Spanish Civil War Food Ration Coupon
Archive

Fascinating Lincoln collection, featuring a vivid, stylized puzzle-style portrait of Abraham Lincoln, with his name and lifespan—"Abraham Lincoln 1809–1865"—printed in ornate script across the top. Uniquely, the reverse side reveals a full sheet of Spanish ration coupons labeled "Auxilio Social – Comedor – Vale por una comida – Ceuta," which translates to "Social Aid – Dining Hall – Voucher for one meal – Ceuta." These coupons were issued during and after the Spanish Civil War and under Francoist rule as part of a state-run welfare program to provide food assistance. While the Lincoln side celebrates one of the most revered figures in American history—renowned for preserving the Union and abolishing slavery—the reverse reflects a starkly different context: postwar Spain's efforts to alleviate poverty through centralized aid. The pairing of these two distinct historical narratives on a single artifact speaks to Lincoln's international symbolism as a figure of leadership and justice, even as it intersects with the localized realities of 20th-century social relief efforts in North Africa. Measures 8.25" x 11.5"

Also included is an original silk ribbon badge from the Lincoln Monument League Convention, held on June 16, 1900, in Lincoln, Illinois. Printed in black ink on a rich tan or golden-brown silk background, the ribbon prominently features a detailed portrait of Abraham Lincoln, with text above and below reading "Executive Committee - LINCOLN - Monument League Convention - June 16th, 1900" The Lincoln Monument League was one of many civic groups formed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to promote the memory and legacy of President Abraham Lincoln. Measures 2.25" x 5.25."
