Description:

Interesting Collection of 2 Daguerreotypes and 4 Tintypes, Civil War Era

An unusual group of two daguerreotypes with four clipped tintype images, undated but likely produced just before or during the Civil War. Includes:

Ninth Plate, measuring 2" x 2.5", No place, undated. A young girl, seated and dressed in a checked dress. Blush has also been added to her cheeks. Housed in a cloth-covered wooden case, with the front cover having become separated.

Ninth Plate, measuring 2" x 2.5", No place, undated. An image of a toddler girl, sitting in a high seat and dressed in a pretty dress. Housed in a cloth-covered wooden case, with the front cover having become separated.

Four Small Tintypes, Seemingly Clipped. Three measure 1" x 1.5", and depict a young boy, a young girl, and an older man. The fourth measures 0.75" x 0.875" and depicts a young girl, identified on verso as "Hattie W. Cutter." All four are housed (loose) in a Quarter Plate cloth-covered case.

Expected wear to the cases, with scratches, bumping to the edges, and bent frames. The glass framing the image of the toddler girl has been cracked. Both Ninth Plate images have separated covers. Minor imperfections to the photographs. Scratches to the tintype images, with uneven edges.

Daguerreotypes, introduced in 1839, are created when a piece of silver-plated copper is coated in light-sensitive chemicals, which creates the photographic image when exposed to light in the camera. The delicate metal would be placed under glass for protection and display. They are reflective and have to be tilted at a 45-degree angle in order to view the image. Tintypes, patented in 1856, are actually on iron, not tin. Unlike a daguerreotype, tintypes are not reflective. Most tintypes found in collections aren’t in any type of protective sleeve or case.
