Brainerd, Rev. John (1718-1747) Important Document written by noted Indian Missionary, Rev. John Brainerd, to the President of Yale, "Gospelising the Indians"

One page historic manuscript document, signed "John Brainerd", and dated, "this 7th Day November 1752", regarding the receipt of money from various Colonies, including New York, Rhode Island, Connecticut and received by the President of Yale College, the Rev. Mr. Thomas Clap. Measures 8" x 11", minor chipping at edges, damp stain present.

In full, "Know all Men by these presents that I John Brainerd of Perth-Amboy, in pursuance to an order from Mr. Peter Livingston, Treasurer of the correspondent commissioners have received of the Rev. Mr. Thomas Clap President of Yale College in New Haven, the sum of L2990-2-4, in Bills of the Colony of Rhode Island and Irish pence: and L17-19-2 in current money of New York, and a number of Bills of uncertain value, all which were contributed in the Colony of Connecticut, in pursuance to a brief granted by the General Assembly of said Colony for the Gospelising of the Indians in New Jersey for which I have also signed another receipt of the same tenor. Witness my hand this 7th day November 1752."

John Brainerd was born in Haddam, Connecticut in 1720 and became an agent for the Honorable Society of Scotland for Propagating Christian Knowledge. He was ordained in 1748 and settled in Newark, New Jersey in the 1750's. He was minister at the Indian church at Hunter's, Mount Bethal, NJ, 1747-1759 and a close friend of Jonathan Edwards.
