RONALD REAGAN (1911-2004) Typed Quote Signed, "Ronald Reagan," 1 page, 8.5" x 11", [n.p., n.d.] with the original place and date of the quote noted as "Brandenburg Gate, East Germany." Offered together with Mikhail Gorbachev, Signed Photograph, "M Gorbachev," in Cyrillic, 10" x 8" color photo of Gorbachev embracing Reagan after the latter awarded him the Reagan Freedom Award in 1992 at the Regan Library.Extremely fine condition.

Reagan's quote, reads, in full: "Mr. Gorbachev - open up this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this Wall!"

" Tear down this wall!" was the challenge issued by President Ronald Reagan to Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev to destroy the Berlin Wall, delivered in a speech before the Brandenburg Gate near the Berlin Wall on June 12, 1987, commemorating the 750th anniversary of Berlin's founding. Reagan challenged Gorbachev, who was then the General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, to tear it down as an emblem of Gorbachev's desire to increase freedom in the Eastern Bloc through glasnost (" transparency" ) and perestroika (" restructuring" ).
