Iconic New Yorker: Hiroshima by John Hersey, The Most Important New Yorker Ever Published, Covered in Netflix's Turning Point!
Magazine/Comic
New Yorker, published August 31, 1946, containing one of, if not the most important articles ever published entitled "Hiroshima" by John Hersey. The magazine measures 7.75" x 10.75". In fine condition, with expected wear, completely intact but some wear to pages within.

The New Yorker featuring John Hersey's "Hiroshima" and its impact were covered in the Netflix documentary series "Turning Point: The Bomb and the Cold War." Although a copy of the New Yorker is held in the collections of several museums, libraries, and institutions around the world due to its historical significance including the National WWII Museum and the Yale University Library, few intact examples exist today.

John Hersey's groundbreaking article "Hiroshima," published in The New Yorker on August 31, 1946, revolutionized public understanding of the atomic bombing by offering a deeply humanized account of the devastation through the personal stories of six survivors. By focusing on their firsthand experiences, Hersey shifted the narrative away from abstract statistics and military achievements to the real, profound human suffering caused by nuclear warfare. His approach compelled readers worldwide to confront the moral and ethical implications of atomic weapons. The article's impact was so significant that Albert Einstein purchased thousands of copies to distribute, recognizing its power to educate and provoke reflection on the consequences of nuclear conflict.

Hersey's writing has been compared to Mathew Brady's Civil War photographs for its ability to change public perception. Just as Brady's stark and raw images of the battlefield exposed the brutal reality of war, moving people beyond the glorified and sanitized versions they had previously accepted, Hersey's article offered a similarly unflinching look at the human cost of nuclear warfare. Both Hersey and Brady used their respective mediums—prose and photography—to reveal the true face of conflict and its devastating impact on humanity. This comparison underscores how powerful storytelling, whether through words or images, can shift public opinion and deepen our understanding of the real costs of war.

The piece was first published in The New Yorker, which initially planned to serialize it over four issues but instead devoted the entire August 31, 1946 edition to the article. Shortly after, it was released as a book by Alfred A. Knopf and has remained continuously in print, selling over three million copies. In 1995, New Yorker essayist Roger Angell noted that the article's narrative "became a part of our ceaseless thinking about world wars and nuclear holocaust."
