Description:

Iconic Image of Albert Einstein Signed, Wearing His Leather Jacket in His Princeton Study

Measuring 7.125" x 8.625", New York, Ca. 1947. A fantastic, casual photograph of Einstein, taken by Lotte Jacobi. Signed and inscribed at the lower right corner, "To Mr. Ben Samuel/Albert Einstein/1947." Einstein is pictured, dressed in a leather jacket, standing next to a table with an open book in his study at Princeton, New Jersey. Einstein is looking off-camera, appearing very much at ease in his setting. Behind him, a large window reveals a forested scenery, adding to the serenity of the photograph. The photograph has been matted to the overall size of 11" x 13". With bumped corners and wear to the edges of the photograph. Einstein's signature is light but very clear. Minor areas of foxing to the mat. The Photograph alone is likely worth the estimate price, not considering the signature

Jacobi took a number of portraits of the renowned scientist during this 1938 session and compiled them into a portfolio. Einstein purchased the pictured Levi's Menlo Cossack leather jacket a few years prior and would go on to wear it for many decades. He famously wore in in the 1938 cover image of "Time" magazine. Lotte Jacobi (1896-1990) was arguably Einstein's favorite photographer, and she photographed him on multiple occasions throughout his life. Jacobi lived in Berlin before fleeing Nazi Germany in 1932 and settling in the U.S. This photograph appears to be a very uncommon image of Einstein.
