Description:

I.G. Paderewski ALS in French

A 1p autograph letter in French signed by Ignacy Jan Paderewski (1860-1941), the future celebrated Polish concert pianist, as "I.G. Paderewski" at lower right. Dated April 28, 1878. N.p. Written on the first page of cream bifold stationery. The inner and outermost pages are blank. Expected wear including light paper folds, else crisp and near fine. 4.875" x 8." A former collector's research material comes with lot.

Paderewski graduated from the Warsaw Conservatory (now called the Chopin University of Music), in 1878, the same year that this letter was written. The aspiring musician wrote this grateful letter to an unidentified well-wisher, perhaps someone affiliated with the Conservatory or one of his piano students. The lack of punctuation has been silently corrected in the translation.

Translated in full:

"My dear Monsieur,

Your good letter deeply touched me. It couldn't be nicer on your part to have thought of me, with you having so many important occupations, and to have proved it to me.

I thank you with all my heart and pray you to believe in my friendly and devoted sentiments.

I.J. Paderewski

the 28 April - 1878."

Ignacy Jan Paderewski was one of the most popular concert pianists of the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. He was the darling of audiences, who loved his unruly red hair and his intensely physical, often violent manner of playing. (Paderewski was injured during a concert in Rochester, New York, leading to the permanent loss of use of his right ring finger, and his overworked and infected fingers often bled on the keyboard.) He played in an unorthodox style in part because he learned piano late in life. After graduating from the Warsaw Conservatory and training in Vienna, Paderewski began undertaking worldwide concert playing tours. He served as Prime Minister of Poland in 1919.
