Description:

Humphrey Bogart Signed Contract Covering His "African Queen" Period

Eight page typed document signed, 8.5" x 11". Dated "August 30, 1948" for a period of "Three Years", and signed by Humphrey Bogart on the last page "Humphrey Bogart". Near fine condition with staple holes to left corner.

A fantastic contract between the Sam Jaffe Agency, Artist's Manager and Agency, 8553 Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles, Ca, and Humphrey Bogart, for the duration of three years commencing August 30, 1948. These were important film years for Bogart's career, and included the film classics of The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948), Key Largo (1948), In a Lonely Place (1950), The African Queen (1951), for which he won an Academy Award, Sabrina (1954), and The Caine Mutiny (1954) for which he received an Oscar nomination.

Bogart’s screen persona was laconic with the suggestion of complex underlying emotions. It was this duality that distinguished him from other “tough guy” actors, who relied on swagger and bravado to convey their anger with the world. Bogart, conversely, employed cool detachment to suggest world-weariness. He often gave his most ruthless characters a slight hint of decency, whereas the heroes he portrayed often had a dark or vulnerable side. He succeeded in making cynicism an endearing quality.

An important contract for both parties, perfect for a Hollywood aficionado.
