Description:

Huge Bound Volume of 52 Issues of "The New York Mirror", 1842

A large bound volume of "The New York Mirror: A Weekly Gazette of the Belles Lettres and the Fine Arts". New York: D. Fanshaw, 1842. A large quarto, containing all 52 issues for the year, 407pp total. Each issue is embellished with engravings and musical arrangements for the pianoforte. One of the front free endpapers is inscribed "To Mary from G.H.H.", dated June 17, 1843. Although the title page is dated 1841, the contents of the gazette all date from 1842, with articles on literature, general news, the latest fashions, and musical presentations. While it would be impossible to list the hundreds of articles included, highlights include: "A Welcome to Charles Dickens"; "Medical Spontaneous Combustion"; "The Importance of Balls to a Young Lady's Life"; "Latest Parisian Fashions"; "Anniversary Engraving: The Battle At Bunker's Hill" with a large descriptive key to the engraving; along with original plays, poetry, and compositions. The volume has become worn and separated at the spine, which has been repaired. Wear, scratching, and bumping to the covers. Toning, foxing, and dampstaining to internal pages. For further condition information, please see the accompanying photographs.

The New York Mirror was a weekly newspaper published from 1823 to 1842, founded by George Pope Morris and Samuel Woodworth. The publication included coverage of art and literature as well as local news. Although the paper declined in 1842, Morris partnered with Nathaniel Parker Willis and relaunched the paper, now titled "The New Mirror", for eighteen months. Following that, it became "The Evening Mirror", which ran from 1844 to 1898. Edgar Allen Poe famously worked for the newspaper as a critic and published his poem "The Raven" in the January 29, 1845 issue.
