Hugh Dudley Auchincloss Sr. married Emma B. Jennings, daughter of Standard Oil stockholder Oliver Burr Jennings, on November 19, 1891. Together, they had three children: Esther Judson Auchincloss, Hugh Dudley Auchincloss Jr., and Annie Burr Auchincloss. Hugh Jr. would become a notable stockbroker and lawyer who later married Janet Lee Bouvier, mother of first lady Jacqueline Kennedy and Lee Radziwill, in 1942. At the time of their parents' marriage, Jackie (aged 12) and Hugh Jr's. oldest son Yusha (aged 14), would summer at the Auchincloss family home, Hammersmith Farm, becoming close friends and confidants.

Although she retained a relationship with her father, John Bouvier, Jackie also regarded her stepfather as a close paternal figure. Indeed, Hugh Jr. would be largely responsible for landing her first job in journalism at the Washington Times-Herald, and would later give her away at her wedding to future President John F. Kennedy. The couple would notably come back to visit Hammersmith Farm during various points in Kennedy's presidency. Upon Hugh Auchincloss Jr.'s death in 1976, the Newport estate became the property of Janet Bouvier, whereupon it was sold and later opened for public tours.
