Formerly from a private collection of relics recovered from private property that has not seen the light of day until now!

The Battle of Spotsylvania was fought between May 9-21, 1864 under the Union commands of Ulysses S. Grant and George Meade as part of their Overland Campaign fought throughout Virginia. During the battle's near two week span, Grant would make several attempts to break the Confederate line held by Lee, but was unsuccessful. While the outcome of the battle was generally inconclusive, both sides considered it a victory either because of their ability to hold the line or continue the offensive. With nearly 32,000 casualties on both sides, Spotsylvania is considered one of the costliest battles of the Civil War.

Today, the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History houses the nearly 5-foot-tall "Spotsylvania Stump", or the bullet hole-ridden remnants of an oak tree just outside the Court House for which the battle was named, and has since become a symbol of the violence displayed during the war.
