Calling card signed by American illustrator Howard Pyle (1853-1911) as "Howard Pyle, His mark" with a charming doodle of a Revolutionary War era bust. The figure's head, adorned in a tricorn hat, powdered wig, and ruffled neckerchief, is shown in profile facing left. In very good to near fine condition, with toning on two of four edges. Mounting traces verso. Overall measures 3.125" x 2".

Howard Pyle is best known as an illustrator, but he also wrote poetry, fiction, and non-fiction. He taught illustration at Drexel University before opening his own school in Wilmington, Delaware. His group of protegees, known as the Brandywine School, included such notables as Newell Convers Wyeth (1882-1945).

Pyle published hundreds of graphically interesting and detailed illustrations in turn-of-the-century books and periodicals. He was especially known for his depictions of medieval heroes, literary characters, and pirates as well as Revolutionary War battles and soldiers. Between 1877-1903, Pyle completed over 80 illustrations with Revolutionary War subjects. In this way, Pyle was well prepared to sketch this cartoon of a portly Patriot!
