Horatio Nelson
n.p., n.d. but ca. 1802-1805
Horatio Nelson PSA NM 7 Signed & Endorsed Wrapper Addressed to Jamaican Gov.
Signed and endorsed wrapper

A partial transmittal wrapper engrossed by British Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805), as "Lieut: Genl. Nugent / +c. +c. +c. / Jamaica" and signed by Nelson as "Nelson + Bronte" at lower left. (Nelson signed his name incorporating part of the honorific title, the Duke of Bronte, bestowed upon him by the Kingdom of Sicily in 1799.) Encapsulated and PSA/DNA graded NM 7. N.d. but ca. 1802-1805. N.p. Expected wear including weathering, scattered foxing, isolated closed tears (repaired), and minor edge loss. A former collector has annotated the right edge of the wrapper cover, as well as the verso. Else very good. The partial wrapper is trimmed to an overall size of 4.75" x 3" while the slab measures 7.125" x 4.25." Provenance: Ex-Kingston Galleries, 1968.

Admiral Horatio Nelson addressed this transmittal wrapper to Sir George Nugent (1757-1849), who was appointed Governor of Jamaica in April 1801. Nugent was promoted to the rank of brevet Lieutenant General in Jamaica and its dependencies in May 1802, thus providing us with the earliest parameter of our date estimate. Nugent's tenure as Governor of Jamaica ended in 1805.

Nelson's contact with Sir George Nugent in Jamaica recalls the former's own extensive military service in the Caribbean. Nelson had served in the West Indies off and on from the early 1770s through the late 1780s, from his earliest days in the British Navy as a teenaged midshipman through the American Revolution and beyond. Nelson's connections to the Caribbean were more than just professional; his wife Fanny Nesbit Nelson was a native of the island of Nevis, and the pair married at a plantation in 1787 prior to the end of Nelson's Caribbean tour.
