Description:

Greeley Horace

Horace Greeley writes a testy ANS, with excellent provenance

Pale blue lined paper slip inscribed overall and signed by newspaper editor and aspiring politician Horace Greeley (1811-1872) as "Horace Greeley." Laid down on larger cream colored album page annotated at bottom "Horace Greely [sic. Given by himself to Mrs. Stevens." Some glue residue and paper puckering but otherwise very good. The smaller slip measures 6.625" x 2.375."

Horace Greeley penned this note to an autograph seeker at an unknown date.

"It is an idle fancy, this of autograph collecting and one should know every-- to date his letter more lucidly than 'Charlestown (?)' before he begins to indulge it. How can I guess what state you live in? Yours Horace Greeley."

Greeley was known for his eccentricity, and this note might be an example of it. If interpreted seriously, then Greeley was condemning autograph collecting as a self-indulgent waste of time and even insulting his recipient's intelligence. If, as is more likely, Greeley was adopting a facetious tone, then his note can be read as delightfully tongue-in-cheek. For, as anyone can see including the autograph seeker he was chiding, he sent his autograph anyway!

Horace Greeley is best known for founding and later editing the New York Tribune. This daily subscription newspaper was one of the first of its kind to feature serious news stories of national scope, and to eschew more sensational or unbalanced reporting. Greeley, who was very socially conscious, even used his paper as a platform from which to champion issues like emancipation, communal living, and western migration.
