Hoover Herbert

Attractive Entertainment Badge from the 1928 Republican National Convention

An Original, attractive Entertainment Badge from the 1928 Republican National Convention that nominated Warren Harding and Calvin Coolidge for President and Vice President of the United States, 5" x 1.5". With intact pin on the verso in working order. Hanging off a red, white and blue ribbon, which is torn at the top, the brass toned badge depicts the word "Entertainment/GOP" with an additional hanging eagle emblem, with the word "Kansas City 1928" along the bottom. A very handsome piece.

The 1928 National Convention of the Republican Party of the United States was held at Convention Hall in Kansas City, Missouri, from June 12 to June 15, 1928 - during the period of the prosperous roaring 20's. Because President Coolidge had announced unexpectedly he would not run for re-election in 1928, Commerce Secretary Herbert Clark Hoover became the natural front-runner for the Republican nomination

The platform praised the Coolidge administration for the prosperity of the mid-1920s, and also promised reduction of the national debt, tax reduction, retention of the protective tariff, opposition of cancellation of foreign debts, settlement of claims from World War I from foreign governments, continuation of the Coolidge foreign policy, support of arbitration treaties, civil service protection, a tariff for agricultural protection and continued farm exports, aid to the coal-mining industry, continued appropriations for highway construction, federal regulation of public utilities, and  restricted immigration and naturalization of foreign immigrants in America among other venues.

However few anticipated the abrupt end to the roaring 20's when by October 1929 the stock market crashed, decimating both corporate and private wealth, collapsing banks, and throwing the economy into a Depression with 30% unemployment.

A phenomenal piece representing the calm before the storm.
