[Holocaust] ALS from "Worried Son" Held at Buchenwald, with 3 Ghetto Currency Notes
ALS
An autograph letter signed from a prisoner held at Weimar-Buchenwald Concentration Camp, together with three Theresienstadt Ghetto currency notes. From a worried son, possibly Marvin Londner Jr., to his family. He lists his address as No. 7365, Block 27, and inquires about the well-being of family members and loved ones. Printed on the front of the letter are Camp Regulations, stating that prisoners were only allowed to receive and send two letters or postcards per month. Any letters that contained "inappropriate content" (anything that was not solely family matters) would be destroyed and mail privileges would be revoked. With flattened mail folds. Light toning and soiling throughout. Very good.

A very rough translation of the letter reads in full:
"Unfortunately, I still have not received the mail from Erich. I am sure I will get it in the next few days. This time, I am waiting for news from Erich with great longing. Hopefully, you have already heard something from Hermann, Rosa, and Gisa. Apparently nothing can be done about Bendow(?) at the moment. We have to be patient. Thank God I'm healthy. Why doesn't S[?] ever write? He could at least write the address, that would be enough for me. I thank Maxeus for the greetings and reciprocate them most warmly. I am very curious about what has been keeping my wife so busy. How was she able to leave so quickly? Did she get married in the end? Write to me about everything. How is Uncle Friedel? I send my warmest greetings to everyone and remain with love, Your worried Son."

Accompanying the letter are three currency notes from the Theresienstadt Ghetto. Of varying size and denomination: 2 Kronen, 10 Kronen, and 20 Kronen. All dated 1 January 1943. The notes all have a vignette of Moses holding the Ten Commandments. Notes such as these were essentially worthless except to rent library books. With very light toning. Very fine.

Buchenwald was a Nazi concentration camp established near Weimar, Germany, in July 1937, and it was one of the first and the largest of the concentration camps within the Altreich. Prisoners held at the camp included Jews, Poles and other Slavs, as well as the mentally ill and physically disabled, political prisoners, Romani people, Freemasons, and prisoners of war. There were also ordinary criminals and those perceived as sexual deviants by the Nazi regime. Those at the camp were primarily forced to work in local armaments factories. Insufficient food stores and poor conditions, as well as deliberate executions, led to approximately 56,545 deaths of the 280,000 prisoners who passed through the camp. Buchenwald was finally liberated by the U.S. Army in April 1945.
