Description:

Mix Tom

Small archive comprised of two TLS, one signed by early Western movie actor Tom Mix as “Tom Mix” on “Tom Mix” letterhead. Both this letter and another by Mix’s secretary are in near fine condition, with expected paper folds, each featuring dramatic signatures in purple felt tip pen. Each page measures 7.25” x 10.25”.

2pp TLS dated November 3, 1922 on “Tom Mix” letterhead signed “Tom Mix” at center of second page. Mix’s letter was in response to inquiries from Sharpless Dodson Green, a school administrator from Trenton, New Jersey. Green frequently contacted notables of the day, requesting they give life advice to graduating seniors. Mix delivered a folksy but self-contained inspirational message: be diligent, be a perfectionist, and maintain “a clean mind … and a clean body”.

“In this day and age more than ever before, it seems to me, there is a great demand for properly trained, alert, conscientious and honest men and women in the business world”, Mix wrote. “The old adage, ‘anything worth doing is worth doing well’ is a mighty good one for everyone to adopt. Doing what we have to do, well, making the most of our opportunities and a sufficient amount of determination, are qualities that success depends upon”, Mix continued.

Accompanied by a June 2, 1924 ALS on “Tom Mix” letterhead and cream marbleized stationery paper in which Mix’s secretary grants Green permission to use the actor’s correspondence “for dictation practice”.

Tom Mix (1880-1940) was the first great cowboy movie actor. Over his twenty-six-year-long acting career, Mix starred in 291 mostly silent films in the new “Western” genre. The handsome actor completed his own stunts, not limited to cattle wrangling, rope skills, knife throwing, shooting, and horseback riding. Mix’s invocation for the students to take “proper exercise, plenty of fresh air, good wholesome food and proper care of the body” no doubt stems from Mix’s own Hollywood cowboy regimen.
