Hermann Julius Oberth (1894-1989) was an Austro-Hungarian physicist and rocket pioneer who served as a mentor to Wernher von Braun as a member of the Verein für Raumschiffahrt – the "Spaceflight Society" – an amateur rocketry group. During the Second World War, Oberth supported Nazi Germany's war effort and received the War Merit Cross (1st Class) in 1943 for "outstanding, courageous behavior". He did not become involved in "Project Paperclip" after the war, but did go on to work for von Braun in 1955.
