Herbert Hoover Correspondence Archive with Researcher of American Relief Agency Marietta Fuller
Archive

Herbert Hoover (1874-1964). Extensive archive of autographs and typed signed letters written by Herbert Hoover to Miss Marietta Fuller, a primary researcher for the American Relief Agency, of which Hoover was Chairman, as well as a hardcover copy of "Fishing for Fun and to Wash Your Soul" by Hoover, and framed photo of the President, measuring 11" x 14" overall, dedicated and signed "Herbert Hoover". Miss Fuller undertook extensive documentation of Hoover's career, including collecting his speeches, published statements, letters and so forth for the Agency's bibliographic record. Includes one autograph signed letter and seven typed signed letters by Hoover dating up until 1957, as well as numerous pieces of ephemera related to Hoover's career and Fuller's service with Hoover, all of which are stored within protective plastic binder sleeves binder measuring 11" x 11.5" x 2". Framed photo has a few loose pieces of matting behind the glass, the ephemera items have expected signs of wear and age including toning, isolated areas of discoloration, creases and splitting along fold lines and the like, to varying degrees; but overall condition of the archive is very fine and the signatures on the Hoover letters are bold and unmarred.

The autograph signed letter by Hoover, 5pp recto only, is significant in that it details his plan for relief for the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927. In late 1926 and throughout the first half of 1927, the Mississippi River overflowed its banks causing the most disastrous flooding the delta has seen to date causing what would today be trillions of dollars' worth of damages. Herbert Hoover, as Secretary of Commerce, was requested by several state leaders in the impacted region to lead the relief efforts. His recommendations, handwritten in this letter, played a pivotal role in his being elected to the presidency the following year.
