Two typed letters signed by Herbert H. Lehman (1878-1963), the American financier and politician. The first is a 2pp typed letter signed dated September 3, 1921 from New York City, with its original transmittal envelope; while the second is a 1p typed letter signed dated April 2, 1930, [Albany, New York.] Expected wear, else near fine; individual condition issues will be elaborated below.

The lot includes:

1. A 2pp typed letter signed by Herbert H. Lehman as "Herbert H. Lehman" on the top of the second page. September 3, 1921. New York, New York. On watermarked paper with Lehman's address as "Herbert H. Lehman / 16 William Street" at the letterhead. Lehman has hand-corrected one word in the text, changing "me" to "us." Flattened paper folds, else near fine. 8.5" x 11." Accompanied by its original transmittal envelope with "Lehman Brothers / 16-22 William Street / New York, N.Y." printed in the return address section.

Herbert H. Lehman had become a partner in his father's and uncles' financial services firm, Lehman Brothers, in 1908. His letter addressed to a Viennese doctor named "Docktor Albert Hamerschlag" served as a letter of introduction for Lehman's friend, James N. Rosenberg (1874-1970).

In part:

"I am giving this letter of introduction to my very good friend, Mr. James N. Rosenberg of this city, who is leaving shortly for Europe and will spend some time in Vienna with his family.

Mr. Rosenberg is one of my very good friends and is giving up his practice here for an extended time in order to undertake the very important work of serving as Chairman of the European Executive Council of the American Joint Distribution Committee…"

Rosenberg, a New York City lawyer, had joined the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (AJJDC) around 1920. The philanthropic organization established in 1914 in New York City raised funds to feed, clothe, transport, train, equip, and resettle Russian Jews who had been displaced by the Russian Revolution and the period of subsequent political, social, and economic unrest. Rosenberg continued his involvement with the AJJDC throughout the 1920s and 30s. He was appointed director of the European Executive Council in 1924 and oversaw the roll-out of Agro-Joint (American Jewish Joint Agricultural Corporation), a related program which resettled urban Jews on to large-scale farms in Belarus, Ukraine, and the Crimea. The AJJDC is still in operation today and provides assistance to both Jews and non-Jews throughout the world.

2. A 1p typed letter signed by Lehman as "Herbert H. Lehman" on the bottom of the first page. April 2, 1930. [Albany, New York.] On stationery embossed at the letterhead as "State of New York / Office of the Lieutenant Governor / Albany" underneath the state seal. Lehman has hand-corrected one word in the text, changing "this" to "it." Docketed in either corner at top. Expected wear including transmittal folds, staple holes, and some minor wrinkles along the right edge, else near fine. 8" x 10.5."

Lehman had been elected Lieutenant Governor of New York in 1928 under the governorship of fellow Democrat Franklin D. Roosevelt; he would serve in this role until 1933, when he assumed the gubernatorial mantle after FDR was elected president. Lehman wrote this letter to Harry L. Glucksman (ca. 1890-1938), Director of the New York Allied Jewish Campaign (NYAJC), regretfully declining an invitation to an upcoming "dinner conference…at the Hotel Biltmore." James N. Rosenberg chaired the NYAJC that Glucksman directed. The organization fund-raised extensively in the United States to support Jews in need abroad. Glucksman had a long track record of Jewish charitable work, including involvement in the Jewish Big Brothers organization, and the Jewish Welfare Board.
