Henry Mowat Leave Pass Signed Aboard "Wretched" H.M.S. Albany
DS
A leave pass signed by British Naval Captain Henry Mowat aboard the HMS Albany. 1p, measuring 8.75" x 4", On board the HMS Albany on the Bagaduce River, dated September 5, 1780. Signed "H: Mowat", granting a pass to the bearer, Zebede Linnakin, to "go to his family at Terrence Harbour and return to this place with such property as he may be able to bring away with him." The pass has flattened folds, with small tears and separations at the edges. Toning, dampstaining, and foxing throughout. Wear to the edges and corners. Large, bold signature.

Henry Mowat (1734–1798) was an officer of the British Royal Navy commanding ships in northern New England during the American Revolutionary War. He was given command of the 16-gun sloop HMS Albany in 1776 and was the senior officer of the three-ship squadron formed with the sloops HMS North and HMS Nautilus to defend Castine, Maine against the Penobscot Expedition. Mowat skillfully anchored the sloops so they blocked the harbor entrance while their broadsides could provide mutually supportive fire with British forces ashore. Although outnumbered against a flotilla of 15 ships, his skillful deployment of naval artillery enabled the British force to withstand a siege from July 23, 1779 until reinforcements arrived on August 14, 1779 to defeat the attacking colonial force. In 1782, HMS Albany was shipwrecked during a winter storm and was abandoned by her crew. Mowat had long been frustrated with his command of her and often referred to her as that "wretched" ship.
