Description:

Henry Moore Signed Print, "Three Piece Reclining Figure No. 2: Bridge Prop"

A vintage offset lithograph depicting a 1963 bronze sculpture by British artist Henry Moore (1898-1986), signed by Moore as "Henry Moore" outside the image field at bottom. The print shows Moore's work, "Three Piece Reclining Figure No. 2: Bridge Prop." N.d., n.p. The print lists copyright information from the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden at the Smithsonian Institution at lower right. Printed in color by the Museum Press, Inc., on semi-glossy paper. Light expected wear including a few gentle wrinkles, else near fine, with surprisingly crisp corners. 13" x 10."

According to the Henry Moore Foundation, there are six copies of this sculptural grouping from 1963, including five bronzes and one plaster copy. Versions of Moore's "Three Piece Reclining Figure No. 2: Bridge Prop" are currently exhibited at museums and galleries in the United States, Canada, and England. One bronze copy of "Three Piece Reclining Figure No. 2: Bridge Prop" is exhibited in Washington, D.C., but at the Kreeger Museum, not the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden.

The three-piece sculptural group posed an interesting representational challenge to Henry Moore. As he explained in a 1963 article published around the same time he was experimenting with three-piece sculpture, "It’s very different once you divide a thing into three. In the two-piece you have just the head end and the body end, or the head end and the leg end, but once you get the three-piece you have the middle and the two ends; and this became something that I wanted to do…"

Henry Moore studied art and later taught art at the Royal College of Art in London after 1921. Moore enjoyed major critical and commercial success in postwar Britain, exploring such themes as the human form (as certainly on display here with "Three Piece Reclining Figure No. 2.")

The Henry Moore Foundation was established by the artist and his family in 1977 to cultivate an appreciation of the arts through financial support, exhibitions, study, and research. Today, you can visit the Henry Moore Studio and Gardens in Hertfordshire, England or the Henry Moore Institute in Leeds, England.
