Henry Dearborn, U.S. Minister to Portugal, Eager to Leave Lisbon: "no intimation from our Government that I may return home"

1p ALS inscribed overall and 2x signed by soldier and politician Henry Dearborn (1751-1829), once as "Henry Dearborn" near the bottom of the third page, and again just below that when writing "Henry A. Dearborn", his son and correspondent's name. The cream watermarked paper is docketed on the last page. Expected light paper folds, else near fine. 7.875" x 9.625". Henry Dearborn, then U.S. Plenipotentiary to Portugal, penned this letter to his son, Henry Alexander Scammell Dearborn (1783-1851). In part, with unchanged spelling and punctuation. Paragraph breaks have been added for improved legibility.

"Lisbon June 12th 1824 -

Dear Henry,

Having received no intimation from our Government that I may return home I begin to suspect that the President considers himself the best Judge of the propriety of my continuing or not, and I shall act accordingly, but whether I am allowed to return the sumer or not your Mother + Laura + Nancy + Henry with his wife, will return…

I am not quite without hope that I may be permitted to return with them, if not I shall endeavour to make myself as easey as possible…I am merely a spectator, having given over all hopes of effecting anything by way of a Commercial arrangement, and of course I can be of no use here…"

Dearborn's letter expresses concern over his diplomatic term end limit. A distinguished Revolutionary War and War of 1812 veteran, Dearborn had been nominated by President James Madison to serve as Secretary of War. After this nod was rejected by the U.S. Senate, however, Madison extended him a consolation prize: the U.S. Minister to Portugal post. Dearborn served a little over two years in this diplomatic capacity. A little over two weeks after writing this letter, despite his attestations that he would abide by the presidential decision not to recall him, Dearborn forced the issue. He requested and received permission to resign on June 30, 1824.
