Description:

Henry Dearborn Orders Flag for Fort Constitution & Tempers Ship Buying

1p, measuring 7.75" x 9.75", "War Department", dated May 15, 1807. Signed "H Dearborn" and addressed to William Linnard Esq., ordering a flag for Fort Constitution and providing instructions on ship purchasing limits. Reading in full:

"I have desired Mr. Cone to purchase a set of Blacksmith's tools and two flags, the tools and one flag for Charleston Harbour, and the other flag for Fort Constitution. Lieutenant Roberts should erect a Smith's shop; there is no occasion for a portable forge. Captain Walbach requires more boats than are necessary. One good, strong yawt [sic] boat, of eighteen feet keel is quite sufficient for that Garrison; - he may be authorised to procure one, plain and strong. For the other articles required by Capt Walbach, you will please to call upon the Superintendent of Mily. Stores." The document has flattened mail folds, with edge toning. Light soiling throughout, with ink transference from folding or laying two letters on top of each other. Boldly signed by Dearborn.

Henry Dearborn (1751-1829) was an officer in the American Revolution and later served as Secretary of War under Thomas Jefferson. He helped Jefferson form policies on Native Americans and recommended creating firm boundaries between the United States and British-owned territories. In 1805, Dearborn was swept up in the Burr Conspiracy and was nearly drawn into a war with Spain. He later was appointed collector of the port of Boston in 1809 by President Madison before being appointed Commanding General of the United States in 1812. He held senior command during the War of 1812 and was honorably discharged from the Army in 1815.
