Description:

Henry Clinton ALS to His Royal Highness William Henry About French Rev.

2pp of a bifolium, measuring 6.5" x 8", n.p., dated April 15 [1792]. Signed "H Clinton" and addressed to His Royal Highness, William Henry, Duke of Gloucester. Clinton writes to the prince about developments in the Revolution in France and the French invasion of the Austrian Netherlands. He praises the William Henry for his concerns about the soldiers and offers his opinions on where he believes the French might strike next. With flattened mail folds and light toning. A few stray ink spots. Boldly signed, overall very good.

Reading in part:

"I am infinitely obliged by your Royal Highness' gracious condescension in sending the inclosed. I think I can judge by it that all goes well in every respect. We are [illegible], in exactly as I hoped H.R.H. would. I wish others felt as much for the poor soldiers as H.R.H. does…I almost think the west Head Quarters will be Casteau, perhaps Bohan…as I don’t understand there is any movement offensive on the part of the French (who I judge will remain quite between [illegible] and Cambray.) [illegible] certainly mean it but whether on the right or left I don’t presume to say. If the French take up the Camp of Caesar or that of Mons or [illegible] they expect us at [illegible] or Douay [sic]. If Bohan at [illegible]…"

The War of the First Coalition was a set of wars that several European powers fought between 1792 and 1797 the French Republic. Relations between the French revolutionaries and neighboring monarchies had deteriorated following the Declaration of Pillnitz issued by Frederick William II of Prussia and Holy Roman Emperor Leopold II in August 1791. Leopold II was Marie Antoinette's brother, who had become increasingly concerned about her safety in France. The Declaration called on several European powers to intervene if King Louis XVI and his family were threatened. In turn, France declared war on Austria on April 20, 1792.

Sir Henry Clinton, KB (1730-1795) was a British army officer and politician, best known for his service as a general during the American Revolution. From 1778 to 1782 he was the British Commander-in-Chief in North America, having replaced General Howe. In 1783, upon his return to England, Clinton published "Narrative of the Campaign of 1781 in North America" in which he tried to clear his name for the failures in the Revolutionary War. Later in life, he was appointed Governor of Gibraltar but died before assuming the post.
