Description:

An awkward response from Henry Clay to a possible breach of etiquette three weeks before passage of the Compromise of 1850

HENRY CLAY (1777-1852) Autograph Letter Signed, "H. Clay," one page, 4.5" x 6.75", Belle Vue [mansion] [Georgetown, D.C.], "Thursday Evening 15 Aug. 1850" to R. C. Derby Esq. Mounted to another sheet with light wrinkles and toning. Fine condition. R.C. Derby is likely Richard Crowninshield Derby, son of Elias Hasket Derby, America's first millionaire.

Clay accepts what he believes to be an invitation to dine with Derby following a previous breakfast with Mrs. Derby while Mr. Derby was out of town, "I rec'd your friendly note which is so illegible that I am not sure that I read it rightly. If I do, it conveys an invitation to dinner on Saturday next, and I accept it with pleasure if I understand you correctly - / You have returned very suddenly and unexpectedly - I thought you had gone to N. York, and , in your absence, I was desirous to have paid to Mrs D. the most marked & respectful attentions. I had the pleasure of breakfasting with her yesterday morning; but you have come back again to demonstrate that you cannot be long separated from her, however possible it might be for her to continue to exist without you. That you may both long live together in harmony & happiness is the sincere wish of Your friend..."
