4pp of a bifolium, measuring 11.75" x 18.5", Philadelphia, dated October 29, 1784. An issue of "The Pennsylvania Packet and Daily Advertiser", No. 1788, printed by John Dunlap and David C. Claypoole. Page 4: "Haym Salomon, Broker to the Office of Finance…The nature of his business enables him to make remittances to any part of the world with peculiar facility, and this he hopes will operate considerably in his favor with those who live at a distance. A desire of being more extensively useful, and of giving universal satisfaction to the Public, are among his principal motives for opening this house, and shall be the great leading principle of all its transactions. By being Broker to the Office of Finance, and honored with its confidence, all those sums have passed through his hands which the generosity of the French Monarch, and the affection of the Merchants of the United Provinces, promoted them to furnish us with, to enable us to support the expense of the war, and which have so much contributed to its successful and happy termination…"

Page 2: "On Friday, the 15th inst. The marquis de laFAYETTE arrived at Boston. On the welcome news being announced that the marquis was approaching the town, a large and respectable number of the officers of the late American army, with whom the dangers and fatigues of war had cemented the bonds of friendship and brotherhood, met him at Watertown, when after mutual congratulations on the occasion, they partook of an elegant dinner provided for the purpose…in the darkest moments of misfortunes he opposed espoused the cause of America - his military talents, the ardor of his virtuous mind, and the nearest treasure of his heart, have been devoted to our cause; and while gratitude is accounted a virtue, the name of la Fayette will be dear to every American…H. Knox…To major-general the marquis de la Fayette."

Page 3: Lafayette's response, "…it will be the pride of my heart to think our American camp was my school, every one of you my brother, and that I was adopted as a disciple and a son by our immortal commander in chief…During my absence, gentlemen, my heart has constantly been with you. As an army we are separated, but forever, I hope, shall unite in a brotherly affection. And now that a glorious peace has terminated your labours, I rejoice to find your attachment to those principles for which you have conquered, ranks you among the most virtuous citizens of the commonwealth."

The newspaper has its original folds and light toning throughout. A few small tears and areas of chipping at the edges. Paper repairs have been made to support the spine of the newspaper. Overall, very good.

Haym Salomon (1740-1785) was a Polish-born Jewish businessman who, along with Robert Morris, was vital to the financing of the American Revolution. He immigrated to New York in 1775, where he set up business as a financial broker for overseas trade. He joined the New York Sons of Liberty and used his skills as a broker to become an agent to the French consul. He worked closely with Robert Morris and helped convert French and Dutch loans into cash by selling bills of exchange for Morris. He died unexpectedly one year after this newspaper was published. Tragically, due to the inability of the government and private lenders to repay the debts incurred during the war, Salomon's family was left penniless when he died.

Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette (1757-1834) was a French aristocrat and soldier, commissioned a military officer in France at age 13. He traveled to North America in the summer of 1777, seeking glory and making a name for himself in the American cause. Congress commissioned him a major general in July 1777, and he became a member of General Washington’s staff. Lafayette would return to France in December 1781 to seek additional French naval support on behalf of the Americans and took part in the negotiations that led to the Treaty of Paris in 1783. His service during the war made him a national hero, much beloved by those he served with and the citizens he fought for.
